Recent Truck Accidents Cause Injuries, Fatalities on I-78

October was a dangerous month for motorists on Interstate 78, and local law enforcement intends to do something about it.

In an early morning crash on Interstate 78 with a tractor trailer, a Myerstown man was killed in Bethel Township, state police said.

WFMZ TV reported that Michael Strausser, 25, was killed when his car rammed the back of the big rig at a high speed in Berks County, about 50 miles west of Allentown. Strausser died at the scene of the late October trucking accident.

Just a few days earlier, it was reported by the Allentown Morning Call that the driver of an 18-wheeler was injured in Lower Saucon Township when his vehicle toppled on the ramp from I-78 to Route 33 in an early evening accident. The Morning Call later amended its report that the driver wasn't injured in the crash.

A mixture of apple juice and fuel flowed from the scene, but police said the liquids posed no threats to nearby streams. Police said the driver had taken the curve at a high speed, causing his large truck to tip. He was charged with driving at an unsafe speed. Law enforcement and emergency responders from Southeastern, Bethlehem Township and Hellertown-Dewey assisted at the scene.

Injuries were sustained in another Lower Saucon Township crash on I-78 after a motorcycle struck the rear of a passenger car. Both people on the motorcycle were ejected, suffering moderate injuries. Both were wearing helmets. They were taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem for treatment of their injuries. The Morning Call reported that the driver of the car was uninjured.

Law Enforcement Looking for Commercial Vehicle Violations on I-78

According to Road Warrior columnist Dan Hartzell of the Morning Call, South Whitehall patrolmen began staking out traffic points on I-78 in late October looking for violations by big-rig trucks including equipment and sticker violations, as well as driving infractions like driving in a convoy or travelling in the left lane, which is forbidden for truckers on that portion of I-78.
