1 dead, more than 20 injured when bus, truck collide

A collision near Rockwood, Pennsylvania, has left one person dead and more than 20 injured. According to reports, a school bus carrying at least 23 people -- mostly students -- and a tractor-trailer were involved in the crash. The truck accident killed the truck driver.

Authorities report that the wreck happened around 2:30 p.m. on Route 281. The school bus was transporting students from the Turkeyfoot Valley Area School District at the time, returning them from a vocational and technical school they were attending in Somerset, Pennsylvania.

State police said that the truck -- which was heading north on Route 281 -- crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with the bus nearly head-on. Reports from the authorities indicate that 23 people -- 21 high school students and two adults -- were on the bus at the time of the crash. But according to the school superintendent, 24 people were on the bus, the extra individual being a student.

A spokesman for Somerset Hospital said that between seven and 10 individuals with minor injuries were transported to the hospital by bus. Eight others were brought to the same location by ambulance, but the spokesman and other officials could not comment on the severity of the injuries.

Both adults and three students were taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center by helicopter, according to a spokeswoman. One of the students was treated and released. The other two students and one of the adults were listed in fair condition. The remaining adult was listed in critical condition.

There is no information available on the driver's safety record, since the driver's name had yet to be released. But the parents of the children on the bus will probably be demanding answers from the truck company about how such an accident could have happened.
