NHTSA Announces Fourth of July DUI Enforcement Campaign

The Fourth of July is filled with many different events celebrating America's independence, especially in a city as rich with history as Philadelphia. Countless fireworks displays and parades will be happening across the city.

People will be traveling to these events or gatherings at the homes of friends, and law enforcement is going to be watching for those who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Roadblocks and sobriety checkpoints will be a common sight for those on traveling on area roads.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has introduced a DUI enforcement campaign that is targeted toward helping law enforcement spread awareness about their upcoming efforts to reduce the amount of drunk drivers on the holiday. The agency states that each year, the Fourth of July is one of the most deadly days for drunk driving accidents.

In 2010, the NHTSA reports that during a 4-day period that included July 4th, 39 percent of accidents that occurred nationwide that resulted in fatalities included at least one driver that was legally intoxicated. More than 80 percent of these crashes happened after 6 p.m.

With the numbers of deaths spiking during this time period, law enforcement will be aggressive at apprehending drunk drivers. Those charged with a DUI need to take the matter seriously.

Punishments may include jail time, high fines and a loss of your driving privileges. Repeat offenders and those with very high blood-alcohol content levels will see the potential penalties increased.

It might be tempting to plead guilty to make the case go away. However, the consequences that can result from a DUI can impact several aspects of your life. Know the options that are available to you so that you can make a decision that is best for your future.
