Costas' gun control statements draw criticism

Halftime during the prime-time Sunday night football game is usually reserved for recapping the day around the NFL. It is commonly non-partisan and designed to give fans an updates and analysis on football games. However, during halftime of game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, broadcaster Bob Costas used his segment to advocate for gun control as part of his reporting on the murder-suicide involving Jovan Belcher, a linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs.

A number of media outlets report that Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend after an argument, then took his own life at the Chiefs' practice facility. Costas quoted and paraphrased an article written by Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock, who lives in Kansas City. He raised several issues about the situation, but generally praised the article.

Costas final quote raised a bevy of online sentiment. He said,

"In the coming days, Jovan Belcher's actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."

Indeed, the connection between (repeated) concussions and NFL players committing suicide will be discussed, but the overriding theme here is how domestic violence and dangerous weapons can destroy lives. We take no position on gun rights and make no attempt to analyze why this tragedy occurred. But this situation (and the many that do not gain national attention) underscores the reasons why courts take domestic violence so seriously, especially when guns are involved.
