Couple that celebrated 63 years of marriage dies in car accident

Two people are dead after an accident that occurred in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The car crash occurred around 4 p.m. and took the lives of a married couple that was in their 80s. According to reports, the couple had celebrated their wedding anniversary the day before the incident - they were married for more than six decades, a total of 63 years. The crash occurred at the intersection of 31st Street and Union Avenue.

The coroner stated that the man had health problems and that he caused the accident that involved the couple and two men in another vehicle. Those men were driving a gold truck traveling south on Union Avenue when a white car containing the elderly couple was traveling on 31st Street. Witnesses reported seeing the white car approach the intersection at a high rate of speed. A stop sign at the intersection was ignored and the car collided with the passenger side of the truck.

Both vehicles traveled across a lane of oncoming traffic and into a concrete barrier where the truck knocked down a light pole. The coroner said that the elderly couple died instantly. The males in the pickup truck were taken to a nearby hospital and admitted with injuries that were not life threatening.

The crash cleanup took several hours as utility workers and police worked together to remove debris and address the downed light pole. Snow began to fall sometime during the cleanup as workers attempted to secure the concrete barrier that was involved in the crash.

A resident in the area said that she heard a loud sound from outside. When she looked out, she found that the noise had come from the accident, and not from what she thought was a snow plow. More reports from neighbors revealed that residents believe Union Avenue to be a dangerous road. One said that many crashes occur on the road, but this was the worst.
