Man indicted in accident that killed 1, injured another

It is a tragedy whenever a life is lost in a car accident, but the tragedy is compounded when it is the result of the careless acts of another. Philadelphia readers will be sad to learn that a family is mourning the loss of a loved one; however, the person believed to be responsible for the man's death will soon be held accountable for his alleged actions.

A grand jury in New Jersey handed down a 3-count indictment against a 21-year-old man who was involved in an chain-reaction collision that killed a 74-year-old man. The March 28 accident occurred when the man, who was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed, crossed lanes and struck an empty vehicle. That vehicle then slammed into a Prius that the 74-year-old man was entering on the passenger side. The man was killed and the driver of the Prius was seriously injured.

The 21-year-old faces charges of aggravated manslaughter and other charges that were not detailed. He is currently out on bail.

Although the indictment will not bring the man back to his family or erase the driver's injuries, it does perhaps provide some closure. The indictment would also shore up any civil litigation the family of the man who was killed or the injured driver might be considering. Even if the driver is found innocent of the charges brought against him, a successful civil suit could still be brought, since the burden of proof for civil litigation is different than in a criminal case.

Anyone who is injured or suffers a material loss due to an accident has a right to seek compensation for their losses. Those who are victims of these types of events can seek financial relief for medical bills, final expenses, and pain and suffering, among others. Speaking with an experienced legal professional can help a person determine what rights they have to compensation and whether or not seeking relief is the right choice.
