Pennsylvania sheriff's officer critically injured in elevator

A sheriff's officer with the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office was critically injured when a mechanism on an elevator in which he was riding broke, sending the elevator flying upwards into the ceiling. The incident happened on Aug. 4 at around 10 a.m. while the officer was working at the Philadelphia Criminal Justice Center.

Reports indicate that the officer was riding a staff elevator in order to get a jury when the mechanism broke. The elevator shot up into the ceiling of the elevator shaft, which caused it crash and sent debris falling.

Another sheriff reported that the force of the accident hurtled the officer like a projectile. The victim reportedly broke his back in several places and was transported to the hospital. His condition was characterized as critical but stable, and reports indicate that he made it through surgery successfully. He remains in a medically induced coma. The CJC will remain closed while the investigation is completed.

Employees who are injured in an on-the-job accident generally have a right to file claims for benefits through workers' compensation coverage. These benefits may pay for all of the person's medical bills and related costs. If the person is left disabled, he or she may also be eligible for monthly disability payments to replace a portion of his or her previous income. Injured workers may want to meet with an attorney to receive help while applying for benefits. If the employer disputes the claim, the attorney may litigate on behalf of his or her client.
