Family works to change the law for DUI offenders

Each year, many people in Pennsylvania are seriously injured or killed because of intoxicated drivers. The problem is a national one, occurring with sobering frequency across the country. One Pennsylvania couple is trying to change the law in the state after they lost their 25-year-old daughter in an accident involving a drunk driver who had a prior DUI convictions.

Blood alcohol detection may become auto safety option

Drivers in Pennsylvania and across the country may soon have access to technology in their vehicles that will prevent them from driving while intoxicated. Researchers are developing an alcohol detection system that will measure blood alcohol content quickly and prevent the vehicle from moving if the driver's level is above the legal limit.

Alcohol tax increase may reduce car crashes

According to a recent study, fatal alcohol-related car crashes went down by 26 percent after a 2009 alcohol tax increase in Illinois. The number of fatal alcohol-related crashes declined by 37 percent among younger drivers, and crashes involving impaired drivers declined by 22 percent after the tax increase. It is believed that similar tax increases in Pennsylvania and other states could save thousands of lives each year.

Driver may face homicide charge after fatal hit-and-run

Police in Pennsylvania have reported that a 62-year-old woman lost her life on March 15 in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident. The woman was struck as she walked with her sister on the shoulder of Airport Road in Hanover Township at approximately 9:00 p.m. Responding emergency services personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.

Drunk driving and car accident injuries in Pennsylvania

Every year, many people are seriously injured or killed in accidents involving drunk and impaired drivers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, 10,322 people lost their lives in accidents involving impaired drivers in 2012. A person dies in a drunk driving accident every 51 minutes, with nearly 30 U.S. lives lost each day.

Police say former officer was driving 100 mph in fatal DUI crash

Philadelphia residents may recall news of a deadly September crash involving a former police sergeant. The officer is accused of being intoxicated and driving more than 100 miles per hour when his vehicle hit a van on State Road in Northeast Philadelphia. The van driver, a 55-year-old father of four, suffered traumatic head injuries and died three days after the collision.
