October 22, 2010 – Attorney Robert T. Szostak, Esquire Planned and Moderated a Course Entitled “The Philadelphia Judge Pro Tem Program: A Fresh Perspective on What It Takes to Be and Appear Before a JPT,” Sponsored by the Philadelphia Bar Association State Civil Litigation Section

Robert T. Szostak, Esquire served as Course Planner and Moderator of a seminar entitled “The Philadelphia Judge Pro Tem Program: A Fresh Perspective on What it Takes to Be and Appear Before a JPT,” presented at the Philadelphia Bar Association annual Bench Bar Conference held in the Borgatta Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey on October 15, 2010. The session was hosted by the State Civil Litigation Section.

The Program featured a distinguished panel of judges and attorneys including: The Honorable D. Webster Keogh, Administrative Judge, Civil Trial Division; The Honorable William J. Manfredi, Supervising Judge, Civil Trial Division; The Honorable Sandra Mazer Moss, Coordinating Judge, Complex Litigation Section; The Honorable Jacqueline F. Allen, Team Leader, Day Forward Program 2009; The Honorable Mark I. Bernstein, Commerce Program; The Honorable Idee C. Fox, Team Leader, Motions Court and Statutory Appeals Program; The Honorable Leon W. Tucker, Day Forward Program, 2007; The Honorable Howland W. Abramson, Team Leader, Day Forward Program, 2008; Edward F. Chacker, Esquire and Gerald J. Valentini, Esquire. The substantive topics covered a history of the JPT Program within the First Judicial District, a statistical breakdown of cases in the Program, JPT requirements, training, assignments and expectations and the role of the JPT in the settlement process necessary to achieve the goals of case management. In an open forum, all aspects of mediation by and before the JPT were explained with detailed practice points for counsel appearing before a JPT. The Judges and Attorneys expressed their views on settlement conference reports generated by JPTs as a significant event leading to the pre-trial conference and case settlement. The future of the JPT Program was also addressed during this lively and informative program which recognized the JPT process as vital to the continued recognition of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Civil Trial Division as one of the finest and most successful urban trial courts in the country.

He is also a member of the Montgomery County Bar Association Trial Lawyers Section, Medical Legal Committee and Rules of Court Committee. Mr. Szostak often serves as faculty for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and trial attorney associations in his practice areas. He has also been a featured lecturer at medical oriented seminars, speaking on subjects such as hospital corporate liability, medical professional liability and medical malpractice reforms.
