Pennsylvania passes ban on texting while driving

Texting and driving has left many individuals injured throughout the country but remains legal in several states to this day. While it is often connected with the tech-savvy, teenage generation, it is certainly not limited to them. Many adults are guilty of distracted driving caused by their desire to send a text back as soon as possible. This practice, however, can be deadly.

In an effort to prevent serious accidents and keep state roads safe, Pennsylvania lawmakers decided to ban texting while driving, adding it to its list of moving violations that a driver can receive a citation for. The decision made by the state legislature was partially influenced by the increased likelihood for the occurrence of a car accident that comes with texting while driving.

Proponents of the new law have cited the increase in public safety that will likely follow the enactment of this new statute. One state representative said "... signing this bill into law today will simply save lives on Pennsylvania roadways." The law will go into effect March 8, 2012. Police officers who see a driver texting will be allowed to issue a citation fining the distracted driver $50. There will be no points attached to the offense.

As too many Pennsylvania families know, distracting driving can have devastating consequences. Hopefully this new law will encourage drivers across the state to put down their cellphones and focus on the road in front of them. It could go a long way toward preventing disastrous car accidents.
