One of the more common traditions during the holiday season involves getting together with family, friends and co-workers. Many of these gatherings offer an opportunity to relax and celebrate the past year. Unfortunately, the holidays also see an alarming number of drunk driving arrests, and this year was no exception.
The Pennsylvania State Police recently released statistics covering the period of December 30th through January 2nd. The agency arrested 285 people for driving under the influence, and also investigated 79 car accidents that were alcohol-related. Two people were killed in these accidents.
For a first-time DUI offender, there are a wide range of potential penalties that they may be facing, which depend upon several different factors. In severe cases, a motorist may be facing a license suspension or jail time if convicted. Also, there have been new laws proposed in Pennsylvania that would require ignition interlock devices for first-time offenders. Those convicted will also need to attend alcohol safety courses to learn about the dangers of drinking and driving.
There are additional consequences for those who have a DUI conviction on their records. Drivers can expect to see their insurance premiums increase dramatically, and can last for a significant length of time. Additionally, a DUI could significantly interfere with an offender's employment status. Certain positions will require a valid driver's license or a clean driving record, and a conviction could result in the loss of a job.
Many people who have never been in trouble in their lives get charged with a DUI and do not know what to do next. If you have been charged with a DUI, you need to know how a conviction will impact all areas of your life. Do not simply plead guilty without knowing all of your rights and options.
