Law Enforcement not the Only Ones Watching for Drunken Drivers

We have all seen someone driving dangerously on area roads. Whether it is travelling at a high rate of speed or cutting us off as we approach their vehicle, other drivers can sometimes behave in ways that make it frustrating for motorists that are following all traffic rules.

Police officers cannot be in all places in all times, and often these drivers do not receive any consequences for their actions. This is leading to more drivers reporting other motorists for unsafe activities on roadways, and much of these calls are for drivers suspected of driving under the influence.

For example, say a driver sees the car in front of their vehicle weaving back and forth. The driver may suspect that this motorist is intoxicated, and could call police. Once the police determine where this vehicle is located, an officer may make a traffic stop.

This motorist may have been reaching for a fallen object or might have had other unexpected incidents in his or her vehicle. And while the driver may have been displaying unsafe driving habits, the motorist was not driving under the influence.

There may be additional challenges for law enforcement that is notified of the allegedly intoxicated driver. If the officer did not personally observe any of this supposedly erratic driving, there could potentially be problems with the stop. There are strict requirements in place before law enforcement is able to make an arrest for driving under the influence.
