Woman dies in six-car accident on Pennsylvania Turnpike

A crash in Washington Township, Pennsylvania, has left one woman dead. The car accident occurred four days before Christmas on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lehigh County. According to reports, the woman who passed away was a 29-year-old resident of Whitehall, Pennsylvania.

Authorities said that six vehicles were involved in the accident, which happened just south of the Lehigh Tunnel in the northbound lanes around 7 p.m. A traffic jam had stalled traffic in the area when a vehicle rear-ended the car located at the back of the pack. This collision caused a fire that spread to four of the six vehicles that were a part of the crash.

In one of those burning vehicles was the 29-year-old woman. Occupants in the vehicles involved in the accident and the traffic jam were helping others escape their burning vehicles. One driver at the scene emailed a news outlet in the area about the accident and the attempts made to rescue the woman. That person said that she or he noticed a vehicle behind them catch fire and then moved to help people get out of their cars, adding that she or he felt regretful about being unable to help the woman who died.

Investigators were likely on scene trying to determine what caused the crash and taking records in case of any criminal or civil actions. It was unclear what vehicle the victim was driving. If she was in one of the vehicles that did not cause the crash, loved ones may be able to file a lawsuit in order to seek compensation for their loss.

This traffic accident highlights the need for drivers to be safer while behind the wheel. With winter upon the state of Pennsylvania, it is only a matter of time before inclement weather adds another factor into the dangerous mix of the road.
