New ATF Chief to focus on illegal guns

Gun crimes have become a top priority for law enforcement in Philadelphia. They believe that guns lead to a number of different crimes, including drug trafficking, rapes, murders and robberies. In 2011, there were more illegal guns seized in the City of Brotherly Love than any other American city except for New York City.

Simply put, the level of gun violence has been troubling.

The new chief of the Philadephia section of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms hopes to change this.

Essam "Sam" Rabadi has been with the bureau for more than 20 years, and is charged with getting guns of the street and contolling gun violence. Before heading the Philadelphia bureau, he broke an underground ring of gun traders that recruited teens from Baltimore and New York to commit shootings.

He was also the commanding officer in a 2012 crackdown on gun crimes, where last summer, federal agencies and Philadelphia cops targeted high-conflict areas to arrest offenders. What was called "the surge" led to nearly 100 arrests and 77 federal indictments. It also led to a precipitous drop in violent crime.

It may go without saying, but gun crimes are very serious offenses that can lead to harsh state (and federal) sentences. Moreover, drug possession crimes can be enhanced when an offender is caught with a gun. In these instances, it is essential to have an experienced criminal defense attorney available to analyze the facts of the case and recommend a course of action.

With gun crime enforcement a high priority, knowing your options is critical.
