CATASTROPHE WAITING TO HAPPEN - 22nd & Market -- A Preventable Tragedy

22nd and Market - A Preventable Tragedy that Philadelpia Trial Lawyers Will Fully Expose and Correct

Philadelphia, Wednesday, June 5, a beautiful morning, and then, what eyewitnesses had predicted for days, the unthinkable but totally preventable occurred at 10:45 a.m., a blighted building at 2136-38 Market Street under demolition, collapsed, leaving carnage in its wake. Six people were killed and several injured because of the reckless indifference and negligence of the demolition contractor, Griffin Campbell Construction, its reportedly bankrupt owner, Griffin T. Campbell who also has a criminal record involving insurance fraud, presumably hired by the owner of the doomed Market Street Property, STB Investments Corp, whose principal is well-known slumlord, Richard Basciano. It was part of his ambitious plan to wildly profit from redevelopment of that section of Market Street which is a gateway into Center City from 30th Street Station.

According to the City, Campbell had met the requirements for demolition contractors - there is no background check required.

Safety experts confirm that numerous safety and demolition standards were violated resulting in this extreme devastation. Numerous individuals working in the area on other properties confirm that somebody knew or should have known the collapse was imminent.

Heroes emerged as the destruction violently unleashed its mayhem and wrapth causing permanent misery for its victims.  Now it is in the hands of government and trial lawyers. The truth is obvious. The lessons to be learned from this man-caused disaster that wrecked so many lives are painfully brutal. A loud message will soon be sent through our trial lawyers.

Trial lawyers, in the purest sense, are an institutional voice in American Society. We are a voice that is fundamental because we are the only organized group who can speak for groups of people who otherwise would not have a voice. Here, we are and will continue to advance and commit ourselves to the victims and families shocked and ruined by the outrageous acts of others in the days and moments before the preventable tragedy. We ask our system of justice to look at these people, to see the devastation, to look at their unforgiving needs, to provide relief and to protect and to prevent this from ever happening again in the City of Philadelphia, and in all cities across America.

We are the ones who stand up for the individual and shout that the individual matters. In the end, as trial lawyers, we bring to bear our right and powers of the law to affirm the standards of care and safety that were so plainly abused and neglected at 22nd and Market.

As a Philadelphia trial lawyer, I and my colleagues stand for equal justice for all. Because we dedicate our lives to helping ordinary people, to restoring lives and to making the world a better place, the litigation unfolding from the Center City catastrophic collapse will in a most powerful sense serve to continue the rescue of the victims and to send the message for change and for public protection. And, because many saw it coming, and we can all see it coming again in Center City and other cities, highways and bridges across America, Philadelphia Trial Lawyers will once again take dramatic action to deliver justice for all, this time from the corner of 22nd and Market.
