FBI sex-trafficking sweep nets 150 arrests

The FBI recently conducted the agnecy's largest ever operation of child sex-trafficking in an effort to respond to growing concerns about teens being held against their will as prostitutes. Child prostitution has been an underlying problem that has not garnered major crime headlines in Pennsylvania or elsewhere in the United States, but it remains a constant as vulnerable teens from difficult conditions are exploited.

The latest sweep was executed with state and local law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania, which marked a change in how sex trafficking rings were approached. According to a Reuters.com report, prostitution is commonly a crime investigated and handled by local police, but the specter of children being involved led federal authorities to act.

The FBI reports that "pimps" across 76 cities including Philadelphia were arrested through the sweep. The names of suspects were not immediately released.

Being charged with a sex crime carries a unique social stigma, regardless of the particular charge. One could be accused of harboring child pornography, soliciting prostitution, or sexual assault, all of these crimes are viewed by society as the worst crimes that can be committed.

Because of this, having a strong defense against these allegations is essential. Getting an experienced criminal defense attorney involved early in the process could stave off criminal charges.

Meanwhile, the FBI, through what has been dubbed "Operation Cross Country" will continue to make prevention of child sex-trafficking an enforcement priority. Citizens are likely to see more billboards asking the public for tips and information on underground rings.
