Rash of bank robberies put authorities on high alert

Philadelphia has seen a recent rash of bank robberies that have law enforcement agencies (and bank employees) on edge. According to a report made by Philly.com, four robberies have occurred across the region.

A Citizens Bank branch in Cheltenham Township was robbed on Sunday when a suspect gave a teller a note indicating that he was armed. The clerk reportedly gave him a bag of money that included a dyepack. It exploded as the man left the bank, and he dropped the bag and ran.

On Monday, a man walked into an Overbrook Park Police and Fire Credit Union and gave a teller a demand note. The man reportedly made off with $10,000 in cash. Two hours later, a man armed with a gun held up a Sovereign Bank in Clemonton, he also escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.

On Tuesday, a man suspected in at least three other bank heists reportedly held demanded cash from a Citizens Bank in Philadelphia. Like the other robberies, the man handed a clerk a note and fled with money.

Despite the amount of money involved with bank robberies, they are commonly not just about getting cash. Other crimes are likely funded with stolen money, such as weapons purchases, drug trades and prostitution. Nevertheless, armed robbery is a serious crime that could lead to years in prison.

To solve these crimes, authorities may question people who they believe may be tied to the robbery (even if they were not directly involved) and may charge them with crimes. In these instances, it is essential to have an experienced criminal defense attorney by your side.
