25-year-old cold case reopened and PA man convicted of rape

In Pennsylvania, rape is a first degree felony with serious consequences that may include up to 20 years in prison, a fine or both, but rape is just one of many crimes that may merit legal ramifications. Other offenses include internet pornography, prostitution, child pornography, sexual assault or a number of other sex crimes.

A Pennsylvania woman recently requested that her file from an alleged 1989 rape be reopened. Detectives responded to her request and sent DNA samples to a lab to be tested against others in the FBI database. The DNA sample from the cold case file matched the DNA of a man who was already serving prison time for three different counts of rape. After making this discovery, charges were brought against the man for this alleged rape--one that occurred almost 25 years ago.

A jury made of representatives from Allegheny County convicted the man of four offenses in the alleged assault from 1989; rape was one of them. He is scheduled to be sentenced by a Pennsylvania judge, which may lengthen his current 90 to 180 year prison sentence.

Rape convictions come with serious penalties, like prison time, fines or both. The legal ramifications are severe in their own rite, but there are also consequences for the family members that remain behind to endure. Financial challenges in the payment of fines, as well as income loss when accused persons are convicted and sentenced to prison are two such examples. When people are charged with sex offenses, they may benefit from counseling with an experienced attorney.
