More Penn State students reporting sex crimes

Many Pennsylvanians spend at least a few years of their young lives at Penn State University, where most students build lasting friendships. Unfortunately, college campuses are also known for sex offenses, especially when there are drugs or alcohol involved.

According to a reported released by Penn State University, more students are reporting sex crimes, which may include sexual assault, statutory rape, and internet solicitation. However, it is unknown whether these types of crimes have become more common, or if students have become more likely to report such incidences. In some cases, victims of sex crimes may be afraid to report crimes that may damage their personal reputation or cause the accused to retaliate.

It is possible that the increase in the number of sex offenses reported could be tied to drug and alcohol use. However, during the same three-year period, arrests involving drugs, alcohol, and weapons decreased. Although university president said that safety is one of Penn State’s highest concerns, it is unknown whether university officials have formulated a plan to reduce the incidence of sexual assault and other sex crimes. Fortunately, many students feel comfortable enough to report sex crimes to university officials.

Although the reporting of sex crimes had increased, it is unknown whether any of the accusations have been proven false. Rape and sexual assault convictions typically come with serious consequences, such as prison sentences and fines. For this reason, people who are facing charges for sex crimes may want to seek the help of a defense attorney.
