Man pleads guilty to DUI in officer's death

An accident that results in a death is always a tragic event, but it is even more tragic when the accident could have been prevented. Drunk driving accidents do not have to occur, and yet it seems they occur frequently, and in some cases a drunk driving accident results in serious injuries or death. A man is facing the consequences of his actions after pleading guilty in an accident that claimed the life of a Philadelphia police officer.

The July 2012 accident happened when the now 48-year-old man drove south in the northbound lanes of I-95. Before he got behind the wheel, he had consumed several alcoholic beverages, including several beers and several vodka drinks. While driving the wrong way on I-95, he struck a veteran Philadelphia motorcycle officer who was on his way home after his shift. The officer died at the scene.

On Oct. 15, the man pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and DUI. He faces a minimum of three to five years, up to a maximum of 40 years in prison. He will be sentenced in December.

The widow of the officer who was killed has filed a lawsuit against the man, the establishment that served him and the establishment's parent company. In the suit, the widow asserts that all three are responsible for the death of her husband.

Just as the widow of the officer who was killed is seeking compensation, so can others who find themselves in a similar situation. Anyone who is injured in an accident due to no fault of their own is within his or her legal rights to seek damages caused by the accident. Compensation in the form of reimbursement for medical and final expenses, pain and suffering and loss of companionship can be sought. A legal professional experienced in these matters can help anyone who seeks relief due to circumstances that were caused by the negligence of others.
