Agencies involved in internet crime investigations

The online world has not only brought ease of commerce to people but has opened up a new venue via which crimes can be committed and alleged. People in Pennsylvania who are accused of internet crimes should know that many different government agencies can ultimately be involved in these cases. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the type of crime being alleged can determine which entity is involved.

Claims of suspected internet fraud, including SPAM emails, can be reported to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. However, these accusations may also be forwarded to the U.S. Secret Service any local office for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The U.S. Secret Service and FBI may also look into complaints about passwords being trafficked online and any hacks of computer systems. Counterfeiting of monies online will also be investigated by the U.S. Secret Service.

Suspected crimes involving online harassment of others or the exploitation of a child, including child pornography, can see the FBI getting involved. Local FBI officials will also accept reports about online weapons trafficking and online threats of violence including bombs.

Another agency which is connected to the FBI is the Internet Crime Complaint Center. The IC3 can take and begin investigations into a wide variety of internet-related crimes. The nature of online crimes can be serious and the penalties very harsh. Given that many such crimes are handled at a federal level, it is always important for defendants to know what they are dealing with and which agencies may be part of any activities.
