On June 12 in Jefferson Township, a 23-year-old man from Bernville was driving a Volkswagen north on Route 183 around 2:30 a.m. According to police, he was traveling at a high rate of speed. Witnesses who happened to be driving behind the Volkswagon stated that he was weaving and driving off of the roadway. At one point, he overcorrected when re-entering the highway, crashing head-on into a southbound vehicle. A 43-year-old man from Bernville was driving the other vehicle, a 2013 Ford F-150.

The driver of the Volkswagon was not wearing his seat belt, according to police, and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Berks County coroner, he succumbed to multiple blunt force trauma. According to police, the driver of the pickup was wearing a seat belt and survived. He suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Reading Hospital via ambulance.

According to authorities, the man’s death was ruled an accident. Both the Fire Police and the Fire Department from Bernville provided assistance at the scene. While the crash scene was in the process of being cleared, which took about two hours, both the north and the southbound lanes of Route 183 were closed to traffic.
